The Carmel Swim Academy needs lifeguards year-round! CSA will offer both American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Recertification Courses throughout the year. The first course of 2021 will be offered April 5-8. Class sizes are limited, so be sure to register early! Read on for more information and scheduled dates for each course.

Lifeguard Training Course

CSA is offering three full Lifeguard Training courses:
April 5, 6, and 7 at Carmel High School
May 14, 15, and 16 at Smokey Row Family Swim Club
May 21, 22, and 23 at Smokey Row Family Swim Club

Participants will learn both in and out of the water during the course, and must meet the following requirements to register:

  • Be 15 years or older;
  • Be able to swim 300 yards;
  • Be able to retrieve a 10 pound brick from the bottom of the pool;
  • Be able to tread water for two minutes;
  • Complete all online training by the end of the course (a link will be provided upon registration);
  • Attend all in-person training sessions.

Students will receive a book at the start of the course that will be used throughout the class. 

Participants must pass all skills tests, which are pass/fail, and score at least 80% on both written tests to pass the course. If a participant passes the course, they will receive a certification that is valid for two years. Certifications include CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Lifeguarding, and First Aid.

Lifeguard Recertification Course

CSA is offering four Lifeguard Recertification courses:
April 8 at Carmel High School
May 16 at Smokey Row Family Swim Club
May 23 at Smokey Row Family Swim Club
May 30 at Smokey Row Family Swim Club

This course is for currently certified American Red Cross Lifeguards. Participants must show proof of their current lifeguard certification to register. Certifications that are more than 30-days expired will not be accepted, and those individuals whose certifications are past that expiration will be required to take the full lifeguard course.

There will be a review of course materials, but participants should come to the class prepared for all skills (in and out of the water) to be tested. Participants will also take the written tests again.

All skills tests are pass/fail, and participants must score at least 80% on both written tests to pass the course.
