Lifeguard Certification
Carmel Swim Academy is proud to offer American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and Recertification Courses.
CSA also offers Lifeguard Instructor Training. See details at the bottom of this page!
Participants will learn both in and out of the water during the course, and must meet the following requirements to register:
- Be 15 years or older
- Be able to swim 300 yards
- Be able to retrieve a 10 pound brick from the bottom of the pool
- Be able to tread water for two minutes
- Complete all online training by the end of the course (a link will be provided upon registration), and
- Attend all in-person training sessions.

All courses take place at Carmel High School (520 E. Main Street, Carmel, IN 46032); please enter through Door 17. Certification courses are $275 – if a participant applies to be a CSA staff person and is hired, 50% of their class fee will be reimbursed!
Recertification courses are $150, and participants must show proof of a previous lifeguard certification to register for this course.
Students will receive a book at the start of the course that will be used throughout the class.
Participants must pass all skills tests, which are pass/fail, and score at least 80% on both written tests to pass the course. If a participant passes the course, they will receive a certification that is valid for two years. Certifications include CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Lifeguarding, and First Aid.
Bring the following to each class:
- Swimsuit,
- Towel,
- Change of clothes,
- Lunch,
- Good attitude!

Lifeguard Instructor Training and Recertification R.24
Participants must meet the following requirements to register:
- Be 17 years or older
- Possess a current basic/level certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding (including deep water) with CPR/AED for the Profession Rescuers and First Aid (r.17 lifeguarding certification accepted). For Recertification must have a current, or expired within the last year, American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Certification, and
- Attend all in-person training sessions.
