Carmel Swim Academy’s proprietary swim lesson curriculum focuses on water safety through the four swimming strokes. In addition to giving you confidence that your swimmer is learning proper technique, they are also learning the proper names for the skills they’re learning: this empowers you to fully know what your swimmer is capable of. Today, we’re taking a closer look at how swimmers learn to regulate their breathing through our program.

When swimmers first begin with us, we focus on them getting comfortable going under the water. You can see our Assistant Aquatics Director, Nicole Carpenter, taking a Hydros 1 student under the water so they grow accustomed to that feeling. We then progress to bobs, both with and without assistance, to build the skill of blowing out air under the surface, inhaling above the water, and repeating the process. The next step is to work on rotating the head to breathe while kicking, using different tools to help balance on the surface: you can see a Triton 2 student working with a kick board, and Poseidon 2 student working with a water dumbbell. Eventually, this progresses into breathing while swimming freestyle, demonstrated by a Carmel Swim Club athlete!
