This month, we’d like to introduce you to Julie Larwood! Julie works at Carmel Swim Academy as a swim instructor, specifically teaching adult swim lessons at all levels. We asked her a few questions so you could get to know her better.

How did you start working for CSA?
“Moving to Indiana from Texas a few years ago meant a fresh start, and initially, my daughter and her family were my only connections here. As a long-time swim enthusiast—a passion fueled by watching my daughters compete as college swimmers—I was eager to find a way to get involved. I happened to be picking up t-shirts for my daughter at the Carmel Swim Club office and ran into one of her friends from IU. I found out from her that CSA needed an Adult Swim Instructor. Being a US Masters Swimming certified ‘Adult Learn to Swim’ instructor, the opportunity to teach adults at CSA seemed like the perfect way to both nurture my love for the sport and connect with new people in my community.”

How would you describe the culture at Carmel Swim Academy?
“The management team is dedicated to diversifying the aquatic programs, ensuring they meet the varied needs of everyone in the community. Our teachers and lifeguards approach their roles with utmost professionalism, prioritizing participant safety and committing to a positive experience in every program offered. The entire team fosters an enjoyable environment, making time spent at the pool a highlight.”

Why do you think swim lessons are important?
“I think the most important thing is safety and survival, ensuring every student gains essential water competence. Beyond that, learning to swim efficiently unlocks incredible fitness potential. Swimming is a low-impact activity that delivers significant benefits for both cardiovascular health and strength. Unlike many other sports, swimming is truly a lifetime skill that can be enjoyed well into old age. No matter what level of swimmer you are, there are lessons available to help you improve. I actually took lessons myself this year and now I swim with the Indy Aquatic Masters team.”

What do you like most about teaching/working at CSA?
“There is immense satisfaction in helping others achieve their swimming goals; I genuinely feel their accomplishment as my own! Since every student is unique, my approach involves carefully tailoring instruction to discover what ‘clicks’ best for each individual. Witnessing that moment of breakthrough is always exciting!”
